CHAPTER THIRTY
Vanessa - Graph Store
âQA complete, error detected,â the other Vanessa repeated for what felt like the one millionth time. Could you go to jail for murdering another copy of yourself that seemed to not abide by the laws of gravity?
âQA complete, error detected,â she repeated again. Van took another long sip of her coffee, which now contained a considerable amout of alcohol in it. The walk back down from the roof had been interesting. The other Vanessa had bobbed along behind her, always maintaining the same distance. Now, sitting back in their apartment, cross legged on her and Noahâs bed, with an alcohol flavored coffee in hand, it was hard to even process what was happening.
âQA complete, error detected.â
Van sipped her coffee again. Maybe if she said nothing, the other Vanessa would leave. Not that she had any data to back up that assumption. This wasnât even the first other Vanessa sheâd run into since meeting Noah. Although it was the first while she was awake. She was awake, wasnât she? Maybe this was all a dream? Was she sleeping?
She glanced over at the computer. The playlist was still pumping out the jams, as she used to say back in the day when she was a kid.
âQA complete, error detected.â
With a sip of her coffee, Van cleared her throat. âWhat error?â
The other Vanessa said nothing and continued to stare at Van.
âQA as in Quality Assurance?â Van asked.
The other Vanessa said nothing.
âWhat kind of QA?â
Still nothing.
âWhy was the QA run?â
Again nothing.
She took another sip of coffee.
âSo what am I supposed to do with you? Can you leave? Can I make you leave? Turn off?â To no surprise, there was nothing. Van tried to take another sip of coffee, but her mug came up empty. âFuck.â She said as she swung her legs onto the floor. She wobbled as she got to her feet. It was the first time she realized just how much vodka had been in her coffee. She stepped towards the other Vanessa and almost face planted on the floor. She wondered what would happen to the other Vanessa if she did that. Would she be the same stupid distance away only down in the earth? Maybe that was the solution to all this? Spend the rest of her life laying face down in her bed. That was totally plausible.
She flicked the other Vanessa the finger, âWhat no reaction to this ether? You⦠fuck, you look so much like me. Noah would love to get us together, maybe a little threesome, and⦠I have to pee.â
The journey to the bathroom was a treacherous one. But Van made it, only slightly grazing her shoulder on the bathroom door as she rushed in. A sense of relief rushed out of her, Van watched the other Vanessa stare at her as she sat there on the toilet. It was strange and damn eerie. âPrivacy, please!â Van yelled.
The small bathroom felt like a place she could never be alone. Sitting there with her panties around her ankles, she started to worry about Noah.
